Ready for a Year of Opportunity

In a special message to Miami Kids Magazine families, Superintendent Dr. José L. Dotres welcomes Miami-Dade students, parents, and educators into a new school year filled with trust, belonging, and possibility.

Every school year offers something more than a fresh start. It offers a renewed opportunity to invest in the future of our community. In Miami-Dade County Public Schools, that responsibility is one we embrace every day as we prepare to welcome our students back to our classrooms. 

For every student walking through our doors, this is the beginning of another opportunity to learn, to grow, and to discover what is possible. Whether you are excited, a little nervous, or somewhere in between, know this: you belong here. You are valued, and we are ready to help you succeed. 

For parents and families, the start of the school year is about something just as important: trust. In a district built on choice, we know families have options. Our responsibility is to earn their confidence every day by providing schools where students are safe, supported, challenged, and inspired. Learning begins with relationships, and students are most successful when schools and families work together. 

That commitment has helped make M-DCPS an A-rated school district for seven consecutive years. We are proud of that achievement, but excellence is never a destination. It is a commitment to keep improving for every student, every day. 

As the needs of our students and our community continue to evolve, so must our schools. We will continue working to make learning more relevant, more engaging, and more connected to the students and families we serve. We will continue to provide educational experiences that connect the classroom to the real world and prepare students for the opportunities that await them. 

M-DCPS is one of the nation's largest selections of magnet and choice programs, students can pursue their passions in STEM, the arts, healthcare, business, international education, career and technical education, and many other fields. Through our High School Diploma Plus approach, students graduate with more than a diploma. They can earn college credit, industry certifications, and participate in internships, pre-apprenticeships, and apprenticeships that connect learning to future careers. 

This year also marks an important milestone as we launch our new Portrait of an M-DCPS Graduate. It reflects a community vision for every student who leaves our schools—not only academically prepared, but equipped with the knowledge, skills, and character to thrive in a changing world. Every graduate should leave our schools with the attributes of collaborator, problem solver, resilient learner, community champion, and an adaptive graduate. Those qualities will serve them long after they leave our classrooms. 

Innovation remains an important part of that work. Technology continues to transform our world, and our responsibility is to ensure students are ready for it. But technology does not change education. Great educators do. Innovation is most powerful when it strengthens teaching, expands opportunities, and helps unlock the potential that already exists within every student and amplifies our human connections, creativity, and purpose at the heart of learning. 

We also remain committed to safety and security. Parents want to know their children are safe, and that will always be our highest priority. Thanks to the longstanding support of Miami-Dade voters, every M-DCPS school is staffed with a dedicated School Police Officer. That commitment reflects what our community values most: providing students with safe, secure learning environments where they can focus on learning and growing.  

As we begin this new school year, I want to thank our teachers, principals, support professionals, school police officers, and every member of Team M-DCPS for the extraordinary work they do each day. I also want to thank our families for the trust they place in us and for being our partners in helping students succeed. 

To our students, I encourage you to be curious. Ask questions. Build relationships. Challenge yourself. The future belongs to those who never stop learning. 

A new school year is a fresh beginning filled with promise. Together, we will continue building schools that inspire, communities that support one another, and opportunities that prepare every student for success. 

Welcome back. We are ready for an incredible year ahead.
