For many families, choosing the right private school can feel like navigating a maze of deadlines, applications, and decisions. Whether you're new parents or preparing your child for middle school, planning ahead is essential. To help guide you through the process, we sat down with longtime Miami educator Josh D’Alemberte—better known as Mr. D—who has worked with families for over 30 years through his tutoring and admissions consulting company, Who Tutors.
Dear Mr. D,We just had our first baby last year. When should we start thinking about applying to private schools?– Anxious in Coral Gables
Dear Anxious,Believe it or not, it’s never too early to begin doing your research. Start talking to other parents now and ask questions like: “When did their child start school?”, “What did they like or dislike about the school?”, and “What is the school’s philosophy or focus?” With Miami’s population growth, demand for top-tier private schools has increased significantly. Many programs begin as early as Pre-K3 or Pre-K4, and applying early can secure your child’s place. In my 15 years of consulting, I’ve met many families who applied too late—but never one who regretted applying early.
Dear Mr. D,My wife and I toured one school and knew immediately it wasn’t the right fit. How do we know when we’ve found the right one?– Curious in Key Biscayne
Dear Curious,Trust your instincts. That said, it’s wise to visit and apply to several schools. Don’t rely solely on websites—go visit the campus. Observe how you’re treated and whether the school’s energy matches your family’s values. Ask for a meeting with the admissions director to get a clearer sense of the school’s mission and priorities. A school should feel like a natural extension of your home and parenting style. If it doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t.
Dear Mr. D,SSAT, ISEE, HSPT—it all sounds like alphabet soup! Our daughter is in fourth grade. Does she need to start prepping now for middle school?– Confused in Coconut Grove
Dear Confused,These acronyms represent standardized admissions tests required by many private schools. The HSPT is common among Catholic schools; the ISEE is used by schools like Carrollton and Ransom Everglades; and the SSAT is widely accepted and also required by many boarding schools. Each has unique formats and sections, so preparation is key. Starting in the second half of fourth grade gives your child plenty of time to build confidence and master the material before testing begins in fall of fifth grade. For many schools, sixth grade is the most accessible entry point—waiting until ninth grade can limit your options due to fewer openings.
