Protect your family during flu season

By The American Heart Association

As the holiday season approaches and families gather to celebrate, it’s also important to remember that flu season is in full swing. Between festive events, winter travel, and time with loved ones, the risk of flu exposure increases — especially for those who are most vulnerable. Taking simple, proactive steps now can help protect your family and safeguard those at higher risk for flu-related complications.

Typically, flu season lasts from October to May, with symptoms including fever, chills, cough, shortness of breath, fatigue, sore throat, and body aches. According to the American Heart Association, the flu can be especially dangerous for people with weakened immune systems, heart disease, diabetes, or those over age 65. In fact, studies show that having the flu can increase the risk of heart attack sixfold in at-risk individuals. That’s why it’s essential to take steps to prevent infection and stay healthy throughout the winter months.

Here are five tips to protect yourself, your family, and those you love during flu season.

  1. Get vaccinated

Getting the flu vaccination is the most effective way to protect yourself and others against the flu. The vaccination will help you be less susceptible to contracting the infection.

  1. Wash your hands regularly

Clean hands protect against many infections, including the flu. Wash your hands with soap and running water for at least 20 seconds to ensure that they are thoroughly cleaned.

  1. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth

Germs are most likely to enter your body through the eyes, nose, and mouth. You can reduce the risk of infection by keeping your hands out of your face.

  1. Avoid close contact with sick people

The flu is contagious and spreads very easily in large crowds and tight spaces. When an infected person coughs or sneezes, droplets can affect anyone near who breathes them in.

  1. If you don’t feel well, stay home

If you start to feel sick, it’s best to stay home and isolate to prevent the spread of flu and save lives. It is always better to be cautious and not risk the chance of spreading or contracting the infection.

“Something as simple as washing your hands regularly can make a big difference,” explained Dr. Marcos Mestre MD, MBA, Chief Clinical Operations Officer

Nicklaus Children’s Health System and Board Member American Heart Association in Miami. “Preventing infection helps protect your overall health, and that includes keeping your heart from unnecessary stress.”
