Guiding the Digital Generation with Balance

By Maria Ramsi

Should we be worried about how technology affects our children?

Technology in early childhood can be a powerful and highly influential tool, playing a significant role in children’s lives. But is it that bad for them?

The American Psychological Association (APA) recommends limiting screen time to one hour per day for children ages 2 to 5 and emphasizes the importance of monitoring the content they consume.

While it's true that technology can have negative effects, such as cyberbullying, attention problems, and increased aggression, should we also take a moment to consider the benefits?

The way young children learn today has evolved, and technology is now an integral part of that learning process. As technology continues to advance rapidly, we could embrace it and use it constructively in early childhood education.

Here are some of the key benefits technologies can offer young children:

  • Development of motor skills, coordination, and visual-spatial awareness

  • Enhanced problem-solving abilities through interactive activities.

  • Engagement with educational games and apps

  • Multi-sensory experiences combine sound, visuals, and touch.

  • Increased creativity and opportunities for self-expression

  • Support for children with disabilities through assistive technology, enabling more effective learning and communication.

We should not be afraid of incorporating technology into our children’s lives. When used appropriately—with balance, supervision, and purpose—technology can support learning, foster creativity, and aid in the healthy development of our children.

Let’s guide our digital generation with care and intention, ensuring that technology becomes a tool for growth rather than a source of concern.
