I’m worried because I believe my second grader is behind his classmates. His teacher’s report said he’s slightly below grade level. What should we do?— Concerned in Brickell
Dear Concerned,
Let me answer your question with a question: what is “grade level,” really?
Is it a precise measure—or is it just an average that ignores the reality that kids develop at different speeds in different areas? One child might be behind in reading but ahead in curiosity, creativity, or emotional intelligence. That’s normal.
I’m not saying you shouldn’t seek help if your child is significantly behind, but remember this: being “behind” now doesn’t mean they’ll stay there. Plenty of late bloomers go on to thrive.
My advice? Let curiosity drive their learning. Make math fun—count change at the grocery store, involve them in everyday money decisions. Encourage them to write, sing, build, and imagine. Most importantly: read to them. Read with them. Read often. Reading is the gateway to all future learning.
Let them play. Let them have friends. Let them be little. Second grade is not a predictor of college or career—it’s a time to explore, enjoy, and grow.
There will be plenty of time for serious academics. For now, your job is to love them, keep them engaged, and fuel their love of learning.
We just moved to Miami from New York and don’t know where to start. The school system here is so different. Who can help us?— Newcomers in South Miami
Dear Newcomers,
You’re not alone—Miami’s mix of public, private, charter, and magnet schools can be overwhelming, especially if you're new to the area. That’s exactly why Who Tutors offers school consulting services.
We visit schools—both public and private—and help families create a short list of best-fit options tailored to your child. Whether you’re looking for a religious community, a school that supports special interests or learning needs, or simply a nurturing environment, we help you clarify your priorities and guide you through the admissions process.
The decision is always yours, but we’ll help you make it confidently—and support you every step of the way.
Warmly,Mr. D
