Summer Safety, Summer is here!
Wait, What?!?!?!?!?! Summer is HERE!!! We had some cool weather in March, and we all got excited. We marched on through April and summer started to say hello Miami! Summer means pool season is here. Which means it is time for lots of FUN, FUN, and more FUN! We also must keep ourselves and our loved ones safe, safe, and safe.
First and foremost, make sure to set up some pool rules and guidelines. Obviously different aged children will need different rules; however, one rule, probably the most important rule is true for all ages, you must swim with a buddy. A rule we used in our old home when our children were younger, was no walking or playing near the pool when you are not in your bathing suit. Determine when it is swim time and when it is not. Make sure your children realize there is no swimming without an adult present.
Walk around the pool with your children, showing them the stairs, ladders, swim outs, entrances / exits of any pool. Remind your younger children to jump out from the wall, turn around, and swim back to the wall. Get in with them, watch them, allow them to make some choices that may make them fall in or make it harder than normal. Play with them, be silly, let your inner child come out.
I like to say, help your child as much as they need, and as little as possible.
Finally, more than anything, have an understanding of cleaning up your pool and surrounding deck when you are finished. I have seen more videos than I would care to, of 2-3 year old's moving furniture, climbing a pool fence, and fall over it, just to get a toy they left inside the pool.
Having clear rules, guidelines, and boundaries to govern your pool, your children, and any guests who will also use your pool, will keep those most precious to you safe and sound for many summers to come.
Have a great summer and see you in the pool!!
