Proper education is the most important gift you can give to a child. In our city, we
have many vulnerable students in need of an opportunity so that they can succeed in
the classroom, and beyond.
The Foundation for New Education Initiatives, Inc. (FNEI), a philanthropic organization
with the mission to enhance student achievement and community engagement in
support of educational initiatives supports Miami-Dade County Public Schools and its
students and promotes the values of excellence, equity, innovation, and accountability.
Two major events in Miami that help accomplish these goals:
For the Love of Learning Gala. This charitable event raises funds for the public
school's educational initiatives recognize student achievement, as well as honors this
year’s Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS), Alumni Hall of Fame inductees.
Nearly 55,000 students benefited directly from FNEI supported initiatives last year
alone. FNEI Supported programs include:
Summer Youth Internship Program: More than 3,500 at-risk youth, ages 15-
18, are placed in paid Internships throughout the county.
Together For Children Program: Preventing youth violence with a countywide,
systematic approach by identifying children most at-risk and providing them with
the necessary prevention and intervention services.
Cultural Passport: An educational initiative, in partnership with Miami-Dade's
various arts and cultural institutions, to provide K-12 students with a different
age-appropriate cultural experience each school year.
Mini-grants for Schools: An annual mini-grant competition for schools to
implement innovative educational activities that foster academic achievement.
Student Scholarships: Through the Posse Foundation, CAP, and several other
Scholarship funds, deserving students are awarded college scholarships.
The Parent Academy: A year-round Initiative providing free classes and
workshops for parents at more than 200 sites throughout the county.
Needy Families/Needy Schools/Project UP-START: Referral s, monetary and
other types of aid for homeless and needy students and their families in crisis.
STEM and Computer Labs: Through generous support from the Ray of Hope
Foundation and the Vicencio Family, and with proceeds from the gala, 6 STEM Labs
and 5 Ray of Hope Computer Labs were created.
Additionally, the 5th annual Superintendent’s 5K Challenge - a Race for Education -
benefiting Miami-Dade County Public Schools. FNEI will donate a percentage of race
proceeds to participating schools based on the number of participants each school team
Adults may register as a Runner/Walker. Students have three options to choose from:
5K, 1-mile Run, and the Kid’s Dash for children ages 2-9.
For the Love of Learning Gala will take place on Saturday, February 22, 2020, at the JW
Marriott Marquis located at 255 Biscayne Blvd Way. The event is chaired by the well-
known philanthropists Trish and Dan Bell, together with Maria and Superintendent of
Schools, Alberto M. Carvalho. The 5 th Superintendent 5K Challenge is taking place on
March 7, 2020.
